What are the different types of resin used for resin bound systems?

Polyurethane Resins

Resin is a specially formulated two-part plastic consisting of a processed part A, cross-linked (mixed) with an isocyanate (part B). Part B comes from a large chemical plant that’s mostly unprocessed. The resin is manufactured to rigorous standards using premier, A-grade materials from a quality supply chain.

The value of resin is in part B. It can be supplied with a 1 to 1 ratio, so you get equal amounts of part A and part B.  Some suppliers will use less Part B and would therefore have a reduced cost, and this makes the system more flexible and result in less reflective cracking.  When cross-linked it cures into an inert, strong, solid plastic that doesn’t move – expand or contract.  Once cured it is chemically stable and does not change (UVr).  When combined with a hard, clean, kiln-dried aggregate it provides a strong durable surface dressing.

Resin is available in both a standard format (aromatic) and UV stable format (aliphatic).

Resin Types – Commercial Grade – Non UV – Standard Resin

Commercial-grade resin is a polyurethane-formulated product. It uses the latest polymer technology for stronger more resilient bonds. It’s an easy-to-use latest generation, 2-part hybrid resin which is quality assured.  Available in 6.5kgs, 7kgs and 7.5kgs kits, this 2-part kit is different to other resins on the market because of its colour.

In other manufacturers’ isocyanate, the colour can be tar brown, leaving a dark brown resin residue on the surface within days. It also changes and dulls the aggregate colour, diminishing the visibility of the veins. The composition and refined manufacturing process of the commercial-grade resin means it is a shade lighter in colour. It will however still cause some aggregates to change colour with light from the sun’s UV rays.

NOTE: This product is not UV stable and WILL turn yellow and darken unevenly with the sunlight UV rays.

Resin Types – Premium – UVR

PolyBound is a leader and pioneer in quality driveway resin supplies.  Our quality-assured Premium UVR stable resin is the professional’s number one choice.  It’s a UV-stable adhesive that will not change colour when exposed to the sun’s UV rays.

Our resin is one of the most refined in the industry.  It’s incredibly strong and flexible and when laid on a suitable base creates a SuDS-compliant driveway.  Available as 6.5kgs, 7kgs and 7.5kgs kits it provides a strong surface with greater tensile strength than many of our competitors.  Increasing the resin content by 0.5kgs increases in strength by approx. 1-2%
